The idea for KAP for the Heart began a little over three years ago when I woke up one night after my only child, Kieran Andrew Popp, passed away from Sudden Cardiac Arrest due to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Little did I know three years ago where this God given mission would be today. We began with $327.00 in our account in 2016 and our heart walk team raised $1800.00 for the American Heart Association.
In 2017, we hosted our first Spring for the Heart benefit where we raised $1500.00. I began setting up at the Northmont Community Market and other vendor shows, which enabled our Heart Walk Team to raise $2400.00 for the American Heart Association. Most importantly, we began to raise awareness about heart conditions in youth and young adults. Additionally, We became a member of the Parent Heart Watch Network, which is the only national voice solely dedicated to protecting youth from sudden cardiac arrest and preventable sudden cardiac death. PHW leads and empowers others by educating and advocating for change.
In 2018, KAP for the Heart grew a little bit more. Our Spring for the Heart benefit was very successful we raised $4200.00 and it allowed me to have the opportunity to speak in the community about Sudden Cardiac Arrest in youth and how it can be prevented. Once again I set up at Community Markets, Fairs, and Festivals, which enabled our heart walk team to raise nearly $1000.00 for the American Heart Association. In addition we held a poker run where we raised $500.00 and Our first annual Murder Mystery where we netted $900.00. We donated $850.00 to the Northmont Drama Club, who did a tremendous job preparing for the Murder Mystery evening. I am truly grateful to everyone who came out to support these events and look forward to your continued support.
I am truly grateful to Northmont High School for their continuing support for the Kieran Popp Memorial Scholarship. Northmont Wrestling had a wrestle for the heart night and donated $120.00. We also set up at a football game and raised $160.00. Our goal is to award the first scholarship to the class of 2020, ten years after Kieran graduated from Northmont. Our Goal is to award the first scholarship to the class of 2020.
In 2018 our expenses included fees for our 501c3, fees and supplies for setting up at fairs and festivals, printing, marketing, and miscellaneous items for fundraising. Our goal in 2019 is to streamline expenses and acquire sponsors and grants to aid in funding of needed items.
In 2019, we are actively seeking volunteers to serve on our Board of Directors in which selected candidates would assist with ideas, fundraiser events, and direction of KAP for the Heart’s mission. We are also in the need of a treasurer who is proficient QuickBooks and non-profit tax laws.
